Overview
Description
The North Pennines National Landscape peatland programme is looking to fully restore a 530ha degraded peatland site in County Durham. The site is comprised of blanket bog, a globally rare and internationally important type of peatland found only in cool, wet climates. The aim of the project is to reverse historic anthropogenic influence on the land through re-wetting, restoring the site back to a functioning state. This work will contribute to the delivery of the North Pennines National Landscape Management Plan. Project restoration work will involve three core elements: 1) Hydrology - Preventing erosion by water and ‘slowing the flow’ through grip blocking, construction of dams and bunding. 2) Slope re-profiling - Levelling steep, bare slopes to encourage vegetation growth. 3) Re-establishing sphagnum - Re-introducing sphagnum moss to increase coverage and provide suitable conditions for natural revegetation of damaged peat areas through plug planting.
