Biodiversity Net Gain

Available now through the Marketplace

Biodiversity Net Gain projects are now live on the North East Carbon and Nature Marketplace!

We are inviting habitat bank owners or managers with Biodiversity Units for sale in the North East region to list their projects the Marketplace, and prospective buyers of Biodiversity Units to engage with our listed projects.

Using the Marketplace is free for buyers and sellers of Biodiversity Units.

If you have any enquiries about Biodiversity Net Gain, please get in touch with us by email: marketplace@northeast-ca.gov.uk

How do I use the Marketplace as a prospective buyer of Biodiversity Units?

Simply create an account as a buyer, and once approved, you can make an enquiry to any habitat bank you are interested in engaging with.

You will make the purchase directly with the habitat bank owner or manager. The Marketplace takes no legal or commercial stake in the transaction.

I can't find the right Biodiversity Units to buy

The Marketplace team can speak to our strategic network of habitat bank owners and managers, and we will use this network to bring forward the right types of Biodiversity Units, in the right parts of the North East needed for development. Please get in touch with us by email if you wish to discuss any missing habitat types or locations of habitat banks: marketplace@northeast-ca.gov.uk

Please also be aware that Local Planning Authorities may be aware of additional habitat banks in their areas that have not yet signed up to the Marketplace. If you are looking for Biodiversity Units in a particular Local Planning Authority, the Marketplace team can contact these teams on your behalf, or you are welcome to reach out to those teams individually.

What will I need to submit to list my Habitat Bank?

We will accept proposed, or finalised projects selling Biodiversity Units in County Durham, Northumberland, or Tyne and Wear.

For finalised projects ready for sale of Biodiversity Units, we will expect you be able to demonstrate that the site is registered on Defra's Biodiversity Gain Sites Register, and that the Local Planning Authority in which the site sits within confirms that the agreed Biodiversity Units are suitable for your project site. We would therefore expect you to be able to confirm that a Section 106 Agreement, or Conservation Covenant, has been legally approved for your site.

We recognise that in order for a habitat bank to be viable, some project owners may which to gauge interest in their proposed site prior to finalising legal work. For a proposed habitat bank, we will list your project if you have completed sufficient ecology survey work to determine the realistic Biodiversity Units available for sale at your site.

Nutrient Neutrality

We will be looking into whether Nutrient Neutrality projects should also be hosted on the North East Carbon and Nature Marketplace.

If you would like to discuss Nutrient Neutrality with the Marketplace team - as a potential buyer or seller - please get in touch with us by email: marketplace@northeast-ca.gov.uk
